History: War is the most southern city in West Virginia, and until the late 1970s, it did not have a public library. Spearheaded by the Women’s Club of War, the War Public Library was established in May 1978. A second carousel building was added to the original in 1988, effectively doubling the size of the library. However, tragedy struck in 2000 when arsonists burned the library to the ground. A new building is in place, and the War Public Library is now a branch library in the McDowell County Public Library System.
